Playing Cards
Anatomy
Designed for games including Poker (N°200 and 201), Bridge (N°300), Patience (N°600 and 601) Belote (N°100) and Tarot à Jouer (N°700), Grimaud’s redefined classic playing cards reference the refined colors used in Grimaud’s historical decks. With a history rooted in innovation and a commitment to artisanal printing methods, these playing cards offer a perfect playability and unmatched durability and quality.
Presented in a paper sleeve and a bespoke box, the cards are offered in a choice of Coral Red or Dolphin Blue backs, with a nasturtium flower motif (iconic coin symbol of Grimaud’s historical Tarot de Marseille) and a monogrammed paper inspired by traditional ‘domino’ woodblock printing methods. Each card is printed on custom-made, black core, casino grade paper and a bespoke varnish ensures improved handling and longer-lasting cards.A ten-color printing technique provides optimal vibrancy and stable colors.
All Grimaud cards feature the statement gold gilded corners introduced by Baptiste Paul Grimaud, who not only pioneered rounded corners but also added gilding to make the cards more resilient to drops and crimping.
Artistry
Grimaud commissioned artist Julie Serre to renovate the iconic Parisian faces of its playing cards, drawing inspiration from the history of Paris with a timeless point of view, infusing her wit in each character's personality, garments and accessories.
While its colors are drawn from Grimaud’s ornate ‘Jeu Louis XV’ costume deck issued in 1895, the Face Cards respect the traditional features of biblical and Greek mythology as well as the French Royal characters from the ‘Portraits Parisiens' deck of 1855 in detail and postures. Meanwhile, elegant and unique new motifs draw inspiration from old Grimaud symbols carved by Félix Simon hidden with the imagery of the four suites: Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs and Spades.

Artistry
Grimaud’s heritage in the esoteric world of Tarot dates back to 1891 when Baptiste Paul Grimaud acquired the Tarot d’Arnoult created in 1748. His great nephew, Paul Marteau, redesigned and reprinted the Tarot d’Arnoult in 1930, bringing this ancient tarot deck back to life.
Today, Grimaud invites French artist Margot Reverdy to create a captivating new version of the Tarot de Marseille, showcasing the illustrator's style and her passion for engravings, while incorporating nods to the color palette and printing techniques of Grimaud's most historic tarot decks.
